Can You Correct Your Vision After Eye Color Change Surgery?

Many patients who are interested in eye color change surgery also have refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, or age-related reading vision problems.

A common question is:

“Will I still be able to have vision correction surgery after keratopigmentation?”

In most cases, yes.

Eye Color Change Surgery and Refractive Surgery

Keratopigmentation is performed within the cornea to change the appearance of the eye. When properly planned, it does not prevent future vision correction procedures.

Patients may still be candidates for:

  • LASIK
  • SMILE Pro
  • LASEK
  • PRK
  • ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens)
  • Trifocal Lens Surgery
  • EDOF Lens Surgery

The most appropriate option depends on age, prescription, corneal thickness, and overall eye health.

Why Do We Recommend Waiting?

Before any refractive procedure is considered, the cornea should be fully healed and stable.

For this reason, we generally recommend waiting at least three months after eye color change surgery.

This allows:

  • Stable measurements
  • Accurate treatment planning
  • Predictable visual outcomes

What If Laser Is Not Suitable?

Some patients are not ideal candidates for LASIK, SMILE Pro, or LASEK.

In younger patients, especially those with high prescriptions or thinner corneas, an ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) may be an excellent alternative. Unlike laser surgery, ICL does not remove corneal tissue and can provide excellent visual quality.

Solutions for Patients Over 45

Patients over 45 frequently ask whether they can reduce their dependence on reading glasses after eye color change surgery.

Options may include:

  • Trifocal intraocular lenses
  • EDOF (Extended Depth of Focus) lenses

These advanced lens technologies can improve vision at multiple distances and reduce the need for spectacles.

The Bottom Line

Eye color change surgery does not automatically exclude future vision correction.

According to Prof. Dr. Mahmut Kaşkaloğlu, many patients undergo refractive surgery months or years after keratopigmentation. With proper timing and evaluation, both aesthetic and visual goals can often be achieved successfully.
