In Children
Tear duct obstruction is very common in children, especially newborns. It manifests as excessive tearing and eye discharge, often affecting only one eye. If the condition does not resolve by the age of one or if there is excessive discharge, the duct should be opened before the child turns one. Delaying treatment reduces the chances of success due to bone hardening.
At our hospital, these procedures (probing) are performed under general anesthesia with the assistance of an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist using endoscopic guidance. For more information, please click here.
In Adults
In adults, tear duct obstruction can occur due to trauma, recurrent infections, or structural factors, leading to excessive tearing and eye discharge. Surgery is required for treatment.
The procedure can be performed using external (from the outside) or endoscopic (through the nose) approaches. When necessary, laser systems are also used to reconstruct the tear duct. These surgeries have a success rate of 90-95%, and patients can usually return to daily activities after a 2-3 day recovery period. Since the procedure is performed endoscopically, there is no visible scar.
